Cape Town has a variety of accommodation alternatives. Estimates put the
number of hotel beds, guesthouses and B&B establishments at over 16,000. In
addition, nearly a quarter of foreign visitors use luxury self-accommodation
apartments, of which there are nearly 600 in the Western Cape. This said,
high season in December/January can commendeer a sizeable chunk of those beds,
with the Atlantic seaborad (Clifton, Bantry Bay, Camps Bay) the most popular
destination for regular visitors and those from abroad. The choice is enormous.
You can choose DeLuxe hotels that have housed presidents, stars and celebrities
or settle for the night in a historic prison chrmingly transformed into
a hotel.
You can go for luxury or middle of the range self-catering apartments,
reliable middle-class hotels, or charming highly individual guest-houses
and B&Bs, lovingly cared for by their owners. Breakfast are legendary at
the better B&Bs and guest houses and are capable of fuelling guests for
most of the day.
Then there are time-shared sites, house swaps and caravan parks - even
universities get into the accommodation business during their holiday periods.
If you are young and doing Cape cheaply, there are plenty of sites that
include cooking facilities geared to backpackers. Backpacking has boomed,
making the Cape the springboard for young adventurous types set on adrenaline
sports or for a trip into the rest of Africa overland in converted Bedford
trucks.
